Throwback Thhhwednesday!
 One very young client was paying so much attention to his words that he started to overgeneralise his ‘L’ sound.
 Koala became “kolala.” Umm…?
Kids can often pronounce ‘L’ as ‘W’, like ‘yewow’ for ‘yellow,’ so why has this gone the other way?

Articulatory anticipation: Our brain and articulators often ‘plan ahead’ for the next sound, and may adapt or shape the sounds that come before.
 There’s no actual “W” letter/phoneme in koala, but moving from the rounded ‘oh’ into ‘ah’ can sound a lot like one, because (in Aussie accents), we keep our voices ‘on’ for the whole word, so it can sound like there is a ‘w’ there. And for a child who has had to concentrate on making many ‘W’s into ‘L’s, this natural ‘W’ was “heard” as a real sound and corrected into an ‘L’! 
To help him hear and feel the difference, we segmented “koala” so he could hear and see where keep the ‘L’ out and where to pop it in! Though, we usually want keep our words altogether as we practice, this choice was made to help this child remain engaged and encouraged for his young age. Slowing it right down let him practise the pattern with accuracy and confidence.

The parent understood me, so alls well that ends in way too many hand gestures. 🤭
